For Japan, I was exploring around the different icons/symbols that represent Japan such as the furin (wind chimes) that represent the sound of the summer and the Torii gate that symbolizes the connection between the mundane and the sacred. However, ultimately I was thinking of the examples that were shown in class such as the one that uses Chinese calligraphy forms as the base of the pictograms — this thus led me to explore language in Japan because language is a big part of one’s culture.

It is because of this I noticed that the Japanese word in Olympic has six unique characters to them オリンピック so I decided to based my six pictograms using these elements that make up the characters.

The sports I decided to create a new pictogram for consisted of; basketball, sailing, water polo, table tennis, equestrian, and skateboarding (which I didn't know was an Olympic sport). To convey the message even more that the host country depicted by the pictogram was Japan I used the red circle (sun) seen on Japan’ flag to add a pop or color and more depth to the pictogram as well as the shape of the wave/water seen in Japanese works of art.
